In the Eleutherodactylus (Craugastor) rhodopis group of Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 226. See map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 304. In the Craugastor (Craugastor) mexicanus species series of Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 123. See account by Jameson, Streicher, Manuelli, Head, and Smith, 2022, Herpetol. Monogr., 36: 25–27, who placed this in their Craugastor mexicanus series and redelimited the species, as well as providing descriptive morphology, morphometrics, and molecular markers, and who noted literature where Craugastor pygmaeus had been confused with this species and that records outside of Michoacán (Jalisco, Nayarit, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Sinaloa) should be referred to Craugastor cf. hobartsmithi, pending further investigation.
