Distribution

South from east-central Panama to western slope of the Cordillera Occidental to the Río San Juan de Micay in western Colombia, to the western slope of the Cordillera Oriental, in the Pacific and Caribbean region, and in the Magdalena Valley; possibly isolated populations in the inter-Andean valleys of the Río Cauca, Colombia, near sea level to 1500 m elevation.

In the Eleutherodactylus (Craugastor) fitzingeri group according to Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 231. Account provided by Lynch and Myers, 1983, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 175: 545–551. Savage, 2002, Amph. Rept. Costa Rica: 226, included this species in his Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri series, Eleutherodactylus fitzingeri group. In the Craugastor fitzingeri species series, Craugastor fitzingeri species group of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 37, and of Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 122. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 140–191, provided a key to the genera and species of Brachycephaloidea (= Craugastoridae, Eleutherodactylidae) in Central America and provided maps and photographs of the species, including this one. Palacio Baena, Muñoz Escobar, Gallo Delgado, and Rivera-Correa, 2006, Anfibios y Reptiles del Valle de Aburrá: 34–35, provided a brief account and photograph. Records from the Magdalena valley of Colombia are now referred to Craugastor metriosistusOvalle-Pacheco, Camacho-Rozo, and Arroyo, 2019, Check List, 15: 392, reported the species from Boyaca, Colombia, and commented on the range in Colombia.
