In the Eleutherodactylus rugulosus group, likely the sister taxon of Eleutherodactylus anatipes, according to the original publication. In the Eleutherodactylus (Craugastor) anomalus group according to Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 222. Removed from a monophyletic Craugastor and from the Eleutherodactylus rugulosus group by Lynch, 2000, Rev. Acad. Colomb. Cienc. Exact. Fis. Nat., 24: 130.
