English Names

La Carbonera Stubfoot Toad (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 39).

Distribution

Known only from the vicinity of the type locality (Bosque de San Eusebio) in humid montane forest in the Cordillera de Mérida, Venezuela.

In the Atelopus flavescens group of Lynch, 1993, Alytes, 11: 77–87. Elevated from subspecies status under Atelopus oxyrhynchus by La Marca, 1983, Milwaukee Public Mus. Contrib. Biol. Geol., 54: 1–12. See La Marca, 1992, Cuad. Geograf., Mérida, 9: 13, for comment on paratypes. See photograph, map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 162. La Marca and Esqueda, 2005, in Rueda-Almonacid et al. (eds.), Ranas Arlequines: 63, provided a brief account. See Barrio-Amorós, Rojas-Runjaic, and Señaris, 2019, Amph. Rept. Conserv., 13 (1: e180): 7, for remarks on distribution and literature in Venezuela. Lötters, Mebs, Köhler, Vargas, and La Marca, 2019, Herpetozoa, Wien, 32: 267–275, reported on vocalizations and suggested that the species is extinct. Barrio-Amorós and Torres, 2023, Reptiles & Amphibians, 30(e18534): 1–4, provided a record from Páramo El Tambor and a dot map of the species.
