In the Atelopus ignescens group according to the original publication. Likely in the Atelopus flavescens group according to Lynch, 1993, Alytes, 11: 84. See photograph, map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 177. The species name is a noun in apposition and not emendable. La Marca and Renjifo, 2005, in Rueda-Almonacid et al. (eds.), Ranas Arlequines: 114, provided a brief account, photograph, and map. See Barrio-Amorós, Rojas-Runjaic, and Señaris, 2019, Amph. Rept. Conserv., 13 (1: e180): 9, for remarks on distribution, extinction, and literature. Lötters, Mebs, Köhler, Vargas, and La Marca, 2019, Herpetozoa, Wien, 32: 267–275, reported on vocalizations and suggested that the species is extinct.
