Comment

In the Bufo viridis group of Inger, 1972, in Blair (ed.), Evol. Genus Bufo; and the Bufo viridis subgroup of Stöck, Günther, and Böhme, 2001, Zool. Abh. Staatl. Mus. Tierkd. Dresden, 51: 269, 281. Removed from the synonymy of Bufo viridis (where it had been placed by Zhao and Adler, 1993, Herpetol. China: 130) by Stöck, Günther, and Böhme, 2001, Zool. Abh. Staatl. Mus. Tierkd. Dresden, 51: 279–291, who discussed previous confusion of this tetraploid taxon with Bufo oblongus, its junior synonym Bufo danatensis, and Bufo viridis. See preliminary map in Stöck, Günther, and Böhme, 2001, Zool. Abh. Staatl. Mus. Tierkd. Dresden, 51: 308, in connection with Stöck, Frynta, Grosse, Steinlein, and Schmid, 2001, Asiat. Herpetol. Res., 9: App.I; Borkin, Eremchenko, Helfenberger, Panfilov, and Rosanov, 2001, Russ. J. Herpetol., 8: 45–53, discussed its distribution as "Bufo danatensis" in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Wang, Song, and Fang, 1996, J. Sichuan Univ., Nat. Sci., 33: 96–100, reported tetraploid toads, referred to Bufo danatensis from Xinjiang, China. Stöck, Steinlein, Lamatsch, Schartl, and Schmid, 2005, Genetica, 124: 255–272, suggested on the basis of karyology that Bufotes pewzowi is an allopolyploid. Fei, Ye, Huang, Jiang, and Xie, 2005, in Fei et al. (eds.), Illust. Key Chinese Amph.: 93, 257–258, provided their justification for considering Bufotes taxkorensis to be a species and not a local variant of Bufo pewzowi, as suggested by Stöck, Günther, and Böhme, 2001, Zool. Abh. Staatl. Mus. Tierkd. Dresden, 51: 291, although subsequent molecular evidence by Stöck, Moritz, Hickerson, Frynta, Dujsebayeva, Eremchenko, Macey, Papenfuss, and Wake, 2006, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 41: 663–689, appears decisive, although Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2012, Colored Atlas Chinese Amph. Distr.: 798, continue to recognized Bufotes taxkorensis as distinct without addressing evidence. Zhang, Stöck, Zhang, Wang, Zhou, and Qu, 2008, Genetica, 134: 353–365, reported on phylogeography of the species in Kazakhstan, Dzungaria, and the Tarim Basin region of central Asia. Fei, Hu, Ye, and Huang, 2009, Fauna Sinica, Amph. 2: 550–561 (Bufo pewzowi) and 567–572 (Bufo taxkorensis), provided an account for China and a spot map. Dujsebayeva, 2008, Selevinia, 2008: 100–107, discussed misidentifications of this species in Uzbekistan as Pseudepidalea danatensis. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2010, Colored Atlas of Chinese Amph.: 233 (as Bufo pewzowi pewzowi), page 234–235 (as Bufo pewzowi strauchi), and page 239 (as Bufo taxkorensis) provided brief accounts including photographs of specimens and habitat. Litvinchuk, Kazakov, Pasynkova, Borkin, Kuranova, and Rosanov, 2010, Russ. J. Herpetol., 17: 290–298, discussed the range with species reference to Russia. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2012, Colored Atlas Chinese Amph. Distr.: 264–266, provided accounts (as Pseudepidalea pewzowi pewzowi (pp. 264–267), Pseudepidalea pewzowi strauchi (p. 266), Pseudepidalea taxkorensis (p. 267), photographs, and range map for China. Fei and Ye, 2016, Amph. China, 1: 791–800, provided accounts by subspecies, photographs, and dot maps for China. A tetraploid species according to Betto-Colliard, Sermier, Litvinchuk, Perrin, and Stöck, 2015, Heredity, 114: 301. See discussion and map by Ficetola and Stöck, 2016, J. Biogeograph., 43: 703–715. Kuzmin, 2013, Amph. Former Soviet Union, Ed. 2: 157–160, provided an account (as Bufo pewzowi) for the former USSR. See detailed account for Mongolia by Kuzmin, Dunayev, Munkhbayar, Munkhbaatar, and Terbish, 2017, in Kuzmin (ed.), Amph. Mongolia: 69–84. A tetraploid hybrid species (♀ Bufotes perrini (eastern lineage) × ♂ Bufotes latastii) according to Dufresnes, Mazepa, Jablonski, Oliveira, Wenseleers, Shabanov, Auer, Ernst, Koch, Ramírez-Chaves, Mulder, Simonovo, Tiutenko, Kryvokhyzhar, Wennekes, Zinenko, Korshunov, Al-Johany, Peregontsev, Masroor, Betto-Colliard, Denoël, Borkin, Skorinov, Pasynkova, Mazanaeva, Rosanov, Dubey, and Litvinchuk, 2019, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 141: 1–25, who summarized its biogeography and evolutionary history. Litvinchuk, Svinin, and Dujsebayeva, 2021, Bonn Zool. Bull., 70: 361–371, reported on multivariate morphometrics and its application to identification.
