Comment

On the basis of data on larval biology and morphology, Cruz and Peixoto, 1982, Rev. Brasil. Biol., 42: 627-629, arrived at the conclusion that this species represents a taxon generically distinct from Atelopus and Dendrophryniscus. Subsequently, Frostius was erected by Cannatella on phylogenetic grounds. Considered to be the sister-taxon of either Atelopus or Atelopus + Osornophryne by Cannatella, 1986, Herpetologica, 42: 197-205. Peloso, Faivovich, Grant, Gasparini, and Haddad, 2012, Am. Mus. Novit., 3762: 1-32, suggested on the basis of molecular evidence that Frostius is the sister taxon of Oreophrynella.
