Comment

West African populations now assigned to Sclerophrys togoensis and Sclerophrys chevalieri. In the Bufo latifrons group of Tandy and Keith, 1972, in Blair (ed.), Evol. Genus Bufo: 159.  Frétey and Blanc, 2002 "2001", Bull. Soc. Zool. France, 126: 380, reported this species from Gabon. Rödel and Branch, 2002, Salamandra, 38: 251, suggested that the mutual taxonomic status of Bufo togoensis, Bufo camerunensis, and Bufo cristiglans requires careful reevaluation, implying that West African populations may actually refer to Bufo togoensis. Channing and Howell, 2006, Amph. E. Afr.: 71-72, provided a brief account for East Africa. Rödel and Bangoura, 2004, Tropical Zool., 17: 207, suggested that reports of this species from Mount Nimba are actually Sclerophrys togoensis. Lasso, Rial, Castroviejo, and De la Riva, 2002, Graellsia, 58: 21-34, provided notes on ecological distribution in Equatorial Guinea. Schiøtz, 1963, Vidensk. Medd. Dansk Naturhist. Foren., 125: 15-15, provided records for Nigeria. Frétey, Barriere, and Ohler, 2006, Herpetol. Rev., 37: 357, provided a record for Central African Republic and discussed the range. Jacobsen, 2009, Afr. Herp News, 47: 2-20, reported this species from east-north-central Central African Republic. Dewynter, Frétey, Jongsma, Bamba-Kaya, and Pauwels, 2018, Cah. Fondation Biotope, 18: 38, provided a brief account and photographs from the Monts Birougou area of Gabon. Dewynter and Frétey, 2019, Cah. Fondation Biotope, 27: 16, summarized the literature for Gabon and provided photographs (p. 52). Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 70–71, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Mali, Banda, Chifundera, Badjedjea, Sebe, Lokasola, Ewango, Tungaluna, and Akaibe, 2019, Am. J. Zool., 2: 38–43, reported the species from the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, northeastern Dem. Rep. Congo. See brief account, range map, and photographs for Equatorial Guinea in Sánchez-Vialas, Calvo-Revuelta, Castroviejo-Fisher, and De la Riva, 2020, Proc. California Acad. Sci., Ser. 4, 66: 137–230. Badjedjea, Masudi, Akaibe, and Gvoždík, 2022, Amph. Rept. Conserv., 16 (1: e301): 47, commented on a population (their Sclerophrys sp. aff. camerunensis 1) from the Kokolopori Bonobo Nature Reserve, Tshuapa Province, Dem. Rep. Congo, which they suggested is a distinct species.
