Neotype, by subsequent designation of Nascetti, Lanza, and Bullini, 1995, Amphibia-Reptilia, 16: 225, MZUF 20365. Type locality: "comune nei giardini vicino Palermo e Monreale", Sicily, Italy. Neotype from "the wood called Bosco della Ficuzza, about 10 km by air NE of Corleone (Palermo; ca. 37° 00′ N - 14° 20′ E), altitude about 1000 m". Secondary homonym of Rana variegata Bonnaterre, 1789 (= Hyla leucophyllata).

Po Plain and adjacent valleys in northern Italy and south into Sicily, presumably in San Marino, north into the Swiss canton of Ticino, and east into Slovenia.
