Hyperolius baumanni Ahl, 1931

Class: Amphibia > Order: Anura > Family: Hyperoliidae > Subfamily: Hyperoliinae > Genus: Hyperolius > Species: Hyperolius baumanni

Hyperolius baumanni Ahl, 1931, Mitt. Zool. Mus. Berlin, 17: 34. Syntypes. ZMB 84956 and ZMB 90925–90926, according to Tillack, de Ruiter, and Rödel, 2021, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 97: 418. MCZ 17627 (on exchange from ZMB), is a syntype according to Barbour and Loveridge, 1946, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 96: 127), although this is presumably due to a combination of Ahl's notorious business practices and Loveridge's belief that the description by Ahl, 1931, Das Tierreich, 55: 291, had priority. Type locality: "Misahöhe, Togo" [= Missahomé, Agou Prefecture, Plateau Region, Togo].

Comment

Possibly a subspecies of Hyperolius picturatus according to Schiøtz, 1967, Spolia Zool. Mus. Haun., 25: 203 (ambiguously stated), and Schiøtz, 1999, Treefrogs Afr.: 117–118, who provided a brief account and map. Resurrected from the synonymy of Hyperolius picturatus by Schiøtz, 1967, Spolia Zool. Mus. Haun., 25: 202–203, where it had been placed by Laurent, 1958, Mem. Inst. Franç. Afr. Noire, 53: 275. Rödel, 2000, Herpetofauna W. Afr., 1: 226–227, provided an account. Segniagbeto, Bowessidjaou, Dubois, and Ohler, 2007, Alytes, 24: 77, commented on the presence of this species in Togo. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 186–187, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. See Portik, Bell, Blackburn, Bauer, Barratt, Branch, Burger, Channing, Colston, Conradie, Dehling, Drewes, Ernst, Greenbaum, Gvoždík, Harvey, Hillers, Hirschfeld, Jongsma, Kielgast, Kouete, Lawson, Leaché, Loader, Lötters, van der Meijden, Menegon, Müller, Nagy, Ofori-Boateng, Ohler, Papenfuss, Rößler, Sinsch, Rödel, Veith, Vindum, Zassi-Boulou, and McGuire, 2019, Syst. Biol., 68: 859–875 (supplemental fig. 1) for phylogenetic placement. Tillack, de Ruiter, and Rödel, 2021, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 97: 418, discussed the collection, provenance, and confusion in the literature about which specimens are syntypes.
