Comment

Removed from the synonymy of Hyperolius marmoratus by Wieczorek, Drewes, and Channing, 2000, J. Biogeograph., 27: 1235, where it had been placed by Laurent, 1952 "1951", Ann. Soc. R. Zool. Belg., 82: 386. Channing and Howell, 2006, Amph. E. Afr.: 168-169, provided an account, but did not include Dem. Rep. Congo or Zambia within the stated range. Pickersgill, 2007, Frog Search: 427, discussed the intergradation of nominal Hyperolius renschi and Hyperolius mariae. See general discussion of the Hyperolius viridiflavus–parallelus–marginatus group by Schiøtz, 1999, Treefrogs Afr.: 206–228. Harper, Measey, Patrick, Menegon, and Vonesh, 2010, Field Guide Amph. E. Arc Mts. Tanzania and Kenya: 184–185, provided a brief account. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 396, regarded this nominal taxon as too insufficiently known to treat adequately in their field guide. Tillack, de Ruiter, and Rödel, 2021, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 97: 407–450, discussed briefly the types, their collectors and collections, and early literature of Hyperolius bitaeniatus, Hyperolius melanophthalmus, Hyperolius noblei, Hyperolius renschi, Hyperolius rubriceps, and Hyperolius udjidjiensisChanning, 2022, Zootaxa, 5134: 301–354, discussed the systematics, reidentified a number of GenBank sequences, restricted the range by excluding a number of populations, provided a range map (mislabled in Fig. 9C as Hyperolius mariae), molecular tree, and a summary of the color patterns for all of the named taxa in the synonymy, and characterized the advertisement call. Dehling and Sinsch, 2023, Diversity, 15 (512): 66–67, specifically excluded this species from the fauna of Rwanda.
