Considered a synonym of Hyperolius acutirostris by Perret, 1962 "1961", Rech. Études Cameroun., 1: 91, and Perret, 1966, Zool. Jahrb., Jena, Abt. Syst., 93: 408, but subsequently considered a distinct species by Perret, 1975, Rev. Suisse Zool., 82: 191. Amiet, 1980, Rev. Suisse Zool., 87: 458, compared this species to Hyperolius acutirostris and Hyperolius endjami. Gabon record by Lötters, Gossmann, Obame, and Böhme, 2001, Herpetofauna, Weinstadt, 23: 29. Schiøtz, 1999, Treefrogs Afr.: 137–138, provided a brief account and map. See account for Cameroon by Amiet, 2012, Rainettes Cameroun: 219–224. Channing, Rödel, and Channing, 2012, Tadpoles of Africa: 216, reported on comparative tadpole morphology. Dewynter and Frétey, 2019, Cah. Fondation Biotope, 27: 25, summarized the literature for Gabon.  Dehling and Sinsch, 2019, Zool. Anz., 280: 65–77, placed this species, along with Hyperolius ocellatus in their "Central African Forest species" group, close to the Hyperolius cinnamomeoventris group. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph.
