Hyperolius spatzi Ahl, 1931, Mitt. Zool. Mus. Berlin, 17: 123. Syntypes: ZMB (originally 26 specimens) unnumbered, according to the original publication, including ZMB 74853–76 and 32602 according to Tillack, de Ruiter, and Rödel, 2021, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 97: 434, and including MCZ 17646 (on exchange from ZMB), according to Barbour and Loveridge, 1946, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 96: 131; ZMB 32602 designated lectotype by Rödel, Sandberger-Loua, Penner, Mané, and Hillers, 2010, Bonn Zool. Bull., 57: 185. Type locality: "Bakel-Kidira (oberes Senegalgebiet)". The description in Ahl, 1931, Das Tierreich, 55: 406., appeared a few weeks later according to Tillack, de Ruiter, and Rödel, 2021, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 97: 407–450.

Emms, Jambang, Bah, Mankali, Rödel, and Barnett, 2005, Herpetol. Bull., London, 94: 6-16, provided a record in Gambia, and noted that upon additional study they agreed with the earlier recognition of this species by Böhme, 1978, Bonn. Zool. Beitr., 29: 374, and not with Rödel, 2000, Herpetofauna W. Afr., 1: 199, who considered it synonymous with Hyperolius nitidulus. Rödel, Sandberger-Loua, Penner, Mané, and Hillers, 2010, Bonn Zool. Bull., 57: 177-188, clarified the delimitation of the species, redescribed the species, and documented its distinctiveness from Hyperolius nitidulus. See general discussion of the Hyperolius viridiflavus–parallelus–marginatus group by Schiøtz, 1999, Treefrogs Afr.: 206–228, and specifically (p. 206) of the form he treats as Spatzi. Auliya, Wagner, and Böhme, 2012, Bonn Zool. Bull., 61: 255–281, reported the species from the Bijagós Archipelago, Guinea-Bissau. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph.
