Comment

The species was considered by Parker, 1927, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 9, 20: 450–478, to be a junior synonym of Pleurodema cinerea. Resurrected by Gallardo, 1968, Physis, Buenos Aires, 28: 137. McLister, Lougheed, and Bogart, 1991, Canad. J. Zool., 69: 2397–2403, found no conclusive evidence that Pleurodema borellii and Pleurodema cinerea were distinct species. De la Riva, Köhler, Lötters, and Reichle, 2000, Rev. Esp. Herpetol., 14: 44, discussed the problem of species distinctiveness of Pleurodema cinerea and Pleurodema borellii, but tentatively continued recognition of Pleurodema borellii. Ferraro and Casagranda, 2009, Zootaxa, 2024: 33–55, provided a detailed discussion of distribution within Argentina. Ferraro, Blotto, Baldo, Barrasso, Barrionuevo, Basso, Cardozo, Cotichelli, Faivovich, Pereyra, and Lavilla, 2018, in Vaira, Akmentins, and Lavilla (eds.), Cuad. Herpetol., 32 (Supl. 1): 17–19, noted that the taxonomic status of this species with Pleurodema cinereum remains problematic.
