Type localities: "Midongy du Sud; prov. de Farafangana; région montagneuse et forestière, alt. 700 m.", Massif de l'Andringitra, Madagascar, and "Befotaka; prov. de Farafangana, ... près d'un torrent ombragé", Madagascar. Gephyromantis verrucosus Angel given precendence over Gephyromantis decaryi leucocephala by Principal of First Revisor.

Without a formal change in nomenclature Glaw and Vences, 1994, Fieldguide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 2: 155, suggested that this might be a subspecies of Mantidactylus boulengeri, or a distinct species. Andreone and Randriamahazo, 1997, Rev. Fr. Aquar. Herpetol., 24: 97, subsequently treated it as a race of Mantidactylus boulengeri. Glaw and Vences, 2002, Amphibia-Reptilia, 23: 295, 304, subsequently provided evidence for it being a distinct species. Glaw and Vences, 2007, Field Guide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 3: 210-211, provided an account. See statement of geographic range, habitat, and conservation status (as Mantidactylus leucocephalus) in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 624. Miralles, Köhler, Glaw, Wollenberg Valero, Crottini, Rosa, Du Preez, Gehring, Vieites, Ratsoavina, and Vences, 2023, Salamandra, 59: 1–41, placed this in their Gephyromantis decaryi complex and discussed its relationships and provided a dot map.
