Prior to the revision of Glaw and Vences, 2006, Organisms Divers. Evol., 6: 236-253, in the Mantidactylus (Gephyromantis) granulatus group of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 312. See also account by Vences and Glaw, 2001, Alytes, 19: 123-127, who placed it in their Mantidactylus asper group. Glaw and Vences, 2007, Field Guide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 3: 222-223, provided an account. Vences, Köhler, Andreone, Craul, Crottini, Du Preez, Preick, Rancilhac, Rödel, Scherz, Streicher, Hofreiter, and Glaw, 2021, Spixiana, München, 44: 175–202, reported on molecular phylogenetics of the Gephyromantis plicifer group, which delimited substantial genetic structure within the nominal species.
