Placed in the synonymy of Mantidactylus guttulatus by Guibé, 1978, Bonn. Zool. Monogr., 11: 18. This was subsequently rejected by Blommers-Schlösser, 1979, Beaufortia, 29: 7. Glaw and Vences, 2007, Field Guide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 3: 230-231, provided an account and noted a similar unnamed species from northeastern Madagascar. Rancilhac, Bruy, Scherz, Pereira Silva, Preick, Straube, Lyra, Ohler, Streicher, Andreone, Crottini, Hutter, Randrianantoandro, Rakotoarison, Glaw, Hofreiter, and Vences, 2020, J. Nat. Hist., London, 54: 87–118, discussed the systematics and the range.
