Phrynobatrachus giorgii De Witte, 1921, Rev. Zool. Afr., 9: 8. Syntypes: MRAC (4 specimens), by original designation. Type locality: "Yambata, (Bas-Congo)". Locality is actually in Equateur Province, according to D. Meirte and E. Greenbaum, personal commun., 27 Nov. 2014.

Distribution

Known only from the type locality (Yambata) in western Dem. Rep. Congo; records from Cameroon are controversial, possibly referable to Phrynobatrachus latifrons. See comment.

Pauwels and Rödel, 2007, Herpetozoa, Wien, 19: 135–148, did not record this species as occurring in Gabon. Frétey, 2008, Alytes, 25: 99–172, summarized the literature. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 288–289, provided a brief account and range map.  Badjedjea, Masudi, Akaibe, and Gvoždík, 2022, Amph. Rept. Conserv., 16 (1: e301): 57, commented on a population of Phrynobatrachus cf. giorgii from the Kokolopori Bonobo Nature Reserve, Tshuapa Province, Dem. Rep. Congo, and noted taxonomic questions that these specimens raise.
