Syntypes: BMNH (formerly 5 specimens); including BMNH 1947.2.6.83–84 (formerly 1906.3.30.127–128) according to Grandison, 1985, in Frost (ed.), Amph. Species World: 448, and 1947.3.2.58–61 according to museum records, as well as specimen(s) in the MSNG. Type locality: "Lambarene, Ogowe", Gabon.

See discussion regarding the taxonomic history of this species and Phrynobatrachus brongersmai by Frétey, 2008, Alytes, 25: 102–103. Frétey, 2008, Alytes, 25: 99–172, summarized the literature. Not addressed by Zimkus, Rödel, and Hillers, 2010, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 55: 883–900, so not assigned to species group. Larson and Zimkus, 2015, Herpetol. Rev., 46: 57, provided the record away from the type locality (Lambarene), at Ramba Village, Lopé National Park, Gabon; this record reidentified as Phrynobatrahucs mayokoensis by Rödel, Burger, Zassi-Boulou, Emmrich, Penner, and Barej, 2015, Zootaxa, 4032: 72. Dewynter, Chirio, Melki, Cordier, and Frétey, 2017, Cah. Fondation Biotope, 11: 23 provided a brief account and photographs of Phrynobatrachus cf. ogoensis from the Mount Koumouna-Bouali area of Gabon. Dewynter and Frétey, 2019, Cah. Fondation Biotope, 27: 33, summarized the literature for Gabon and provided photographs (p. 62), and noted that the identification is provisional of specimens referred to this species in Gabon by Dewynter, Chirio, Melki, Cordier, and Frétey, 2017, Cah. Fondation Biotope, 11: 23, and Dewynter, Frétey, Jongsma, Bamba-Kaya, and Pauwels, 2018, Cah. Fondation Biotope, 18: 36. Dewynter, Frétey, Jongsma, Bamba-Kaya, and Pauwels, 2018, Cah.
