Pipa snethlageae Müller, 1914, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 8, 14: 102. Holotype: ZSM 1/1914, now lost, according to Trueb and Cannatella, 1986, Herpetologica, 42: 440, who designated as neotype ZSM 54/1914 (a topotype). See comments by Glaw and Franzen, 2006, Spixiana, München, 29: 185. Type locality: "Utinga, near Pará (Belém), State of Pará, N.E. Brazil".

English Names

Utinga Surinam Toad (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 96).

Distribution

French Guiana to the state of Pará in northeastern Brazil and Amazonian Peru into the Amazon and Orinoco drainage of eastern Colombia (Vichada); presumably throughout intervening Amazonia.

Natural Resident: Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Peru

Likely/Controversially Present: Venezuela

Comment

Massemin, Bordage, and Kunz, 2007, Salamandra, 43: 139-147, reported the species for French Guiana and discussed its natural history. Rodríguez and Duellman, 1994, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 22: 77–78, provided a brief account for the Iquitos region of northeastern Peru. Acosta-Galvis, Lasso, and Morales-Betancourt, 2016, Biota Colomb., 17: 105–116, provided a record from the Orinoco drainage of Colombia and discussed its range and cast doubt on the distinctiveness of this nominal species from Pipa pipa. Metcalf, Marsh, Torres Pacaya, Graham, and Gunnels, 2020, Herpetol. Notes, 13: 753–767, reported the species from the Santa Cruz Forest Reserve, Loreto, northeastern Peru.
