Hynobius osumiensis Nishikawa and Matsui, 2014, Zootaxa, 3852: 215. Holotype: KUHE 24961, by original designation. Type locality: "Kinko-cho, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan (alt. 380 m a.s.l.)".

Distribution

Known only from the Kimotsuki Mountains on the Osumi Peninsula of Kyushu Island, Japan, 380 m to 810 m in elevation.

Comment

According to the original publication, previously confused with Hynobius boulengeri and the sister taxon of a group composed of Hynobius amakusaensis, and Hynobius stejnegeri. Mapped as Hynobius sp. Osumi-Amakusa by Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 73. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 125–126, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
