Southern and eastern slopes of Pico de Orizaba in the Mexican states of Puebla and Veracruz at elevations that range from 2600 to approximately 3100 m elevation.

Aguilar-López, Pineda-Arredondo, and García-Bañuelos, 2022, Rev. Latinoam. Herpetol., 5: 202–205, added a new collection site, discussed the range and natural history. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 804–805, provided an account summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
