Desmognathus valentinei Means, Lamb, and Bernardo, 2017, Zootaxa, 4263: 484. Holotype: MCZ A-143850, by original designation. Type locality: "Talisheek Bay swamp, ~20 m elevation, east of Money Hill Road, 30.568056˚ N, 89.927778˚ W, in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana", USA.

Comment

Confused with Desmognathus auriculatus prior to its naming according to the original publication. Pyron, O'Connell, Lemmon, Lemmon, and Beamer, 2022, Ecol. Evol., 12 (2: e8574): 1–38, provided molecular evidence that nominal Desmognathus valentinei is composed of two lineage-species. One of these, from southeastern Mississippi and southwestern Alabama, was subsequently named as Desmognathus pascagoula. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 1001–1002, provided an account summarizing systematics, morphology, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
