Comment

Removed from the synonymy of Euproctus by Carranza and Amat, 2005, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 145: 555; Calotriton was also considered by these authors to be the sister taxon of Triturus (sensu stricto). Weisrock, Papenfuss, Macey, Litvinchuk, Polymeni, Uğurtaş, Zhao, Jowkar, and Larson, 2006, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 41: 855-857, concurred with this view and considered Calotriton to be the sister taxon of Triturus (as the Triturus cristatus group). See comment under Euproctus. Steinfartz, Vicario, Arntzen, and Caccone, 2007, J. Exp. Zool., 308B: 139-142, suggested on the basis of molecular evidence that Calotriton is the sister taxon of Triturus. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, on the basis of a study of legacy DNA sequences confirmed this arrangement. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 145–146, provided a brief account, photo, and map. Sparreboom, 2014, Salamanders Old World: 171–175, reviewed the biology, characteristics, distribution, reproduction, and conservation of the species. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 405–411, provided species accounts, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
