Phrynopus barthlenae Lehr and Aguilar, 2002, Zool. Abh. Staatl. Mus. Tierkd. Dresden, 52: 57-64. Holotype: MUSM 20606, by original designation. Type locality: "under stones near a potato field about 15 km southeast of Maraypata near Laguna Gwengway (10° 11,08′ S, 76° 05,60′ W 3680 m above sea level), Provincia Ambo, Departamento de Huánuco, Peru".

Vicinity of the type locality (15 km southeast of Maraypata) and from Alcas, San Rafael District, both localities in Provincia Ambo, Huánuco Department, Peru, ca. 3680 m elevation.
