Duellman and Fritts, 1972, Occas. Pap. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 9: 11, rejected any taxonomic distinction of this form from Gastrotheca peruana, but Rodríguez, D’Elía, Ortega, and Aguilar, 2019, Rev. Peruana Biol., 26: 461–468, on the sole basis of 16S mtDNA regarding Gastrotheca dissimilis as a distinct lineage.
