Distribution
Known only from the Dracula Reserve Conservation Area and Dracula Youth Reserve, managed by Reserva Youth Land Trust, western slopes of the Andes, Carchi Province, northern Ecuador, 1495 to 1750 m elevation; restricted to montane cloud forest in the San Juan River drainage, in the Mira basin. Expected in adjacent Colombia.

In the Hyloscirtus bogotensis group, Hyloscirtus alytolylax complex, the sister taxon of Hyloscirtus masphi, according to the original publication, where advertisement call, external morphology, morphometrics, and molecular markers were detailed.
