Bufo gariepensis nubicola Hewitt, 1927, Rec. Albany Mus., 3: 412. Holotype: AMG; AMG 5227 (now PEM A2513) according to Branch and Braack, 1996 "1995", Madoqua, Windhoek, 19: 20, who considered this a lectotype by their designation even though Hewitt specifically referred to a single specimen as 'Type' and this had been noted by Lambiris, 1988, Lammergeyer, 39: XXX. Type locality: "the summit of Mont-aux-Sources (11,500 ft.)", Lesotho.

Bufo nubicolus — FitzSimons, 1948, Ann. Transvaal Mus., 21: 79. Incorrect subsequent spelling (treating a noun in apposition as an adjective).

Bufo gariepensis nubicolus — Poynton, 1964, Ann. Natal Mus., 17: 48. Incorrect subsequent spelling.
