Sphaenorhynchus botocudo Caramaschi, Almeida, and Gasparini, 2009, Zootaxa, 2115: 35. Holotype: MNRJ 50625, by original designation. Type locality: "Lagoa Nova (17°57′89″S, 40°25′80″W), Fazenda Gemada, Municipality of Mucurici, State of Espírito Santo, Brazil".

Lacerda and Moura, 2013, Salamandra, 49: 105–108, discussed the Bahia record of Lacerda, Santana, Silva, and Feio, 2010, Check List, 6: 242–243, and reidentified it as Sphaenorhynchus palustris. 242–243. Bovolon, Zornosa-Torres, Augusto-Alves, Almeida, Gasparini, and Toledo, 2020, Salamandra, 56: 401–404, described the advertisement call.
