Comment

Confused with Phlyctimantis leonardi by many authors previous to its description (Schiøtz, 1999, Treefrogs Afr.: 317). The distinctiveness of Phlyctimantis boulengeri from Phlyctimantis leondardi has been questioned by Largen and Dowsett-Lemaire, 1991, Tauraco Res. Rept., 4: 151-152. Gabon record by Lötters, Gossmann, Obame, and Böhme, 2001, Herpetofauna, Weinstadt, 23: 32. Rödel and Branch, 2002, Salamandra, 38: 260, suggested that this name might cover more than one species. Köhler, Scheelke, Schick, Veith, and Lötters, 2005, Afr. Zool., 40: 139-141, discussed advertisement calls and confusion with Phylyctimantis leonardi. Rödel, Gil, Agyei, Leaché, Diaz, Fujita, and Ernst, 2005, Salamandra, 41: 107-127, reported Phlyctimantis cf. boulengeri from Ghana. Amiet, 2007, Rev. Suisse Zool., 114: 87-126, discussed this species in Cameroon. Onadeko and Rödel, 2009, Salamandra, 45: 1-14, suggested that the two distributional blocks probably represent different species. Hillers, Ofori-Boateng, Segniagbeto, Agyei, and Rödel, 2009, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 85: 127-141, provided new records in central Ghana. Channing, Rödel, and Channing, 2012, Tadpoles of Africa: 245–246, provided information on comparative larval morphology. Schiøtz, 1999, Treefrogs Afr.: 317–319, provided a brief account and map. Dewynter, Chirio, Melki, Cordier, and Frétey, 2017, Cah. Fondation Biotope, 11: 21, provided a brief account and photographs of this species from the Mount Koumouna-Bouali area of Gabon.  Dewynter and Frétey, 2019, Cah. Fondation Biotope, 27: 30, suggested on the basis of evidence published by Deichmann, Mulcahy, Vanthomme, Tobi, Wynn, Zimkus, and McDiarmid, 2017, PLoS One, 12 (11: e0187283): 19, briefly discussed the issue and suggested that all records from Gabon could be referred to Phlyctimantis leonardi. As the ranges seem to be highly provisional, it seems that the ranges of and the boundary between and the populations within Phlyctimantis leonardi and Phlyctimantis boulengeri need to be assayed at a molecular basis to determine how many lineages and the ranges that compose both nominal species (DRF). Rödel and Glos, 2019, Zoosyst. Evol., 95: 24, reported this species from the Foya Proposed Protected Area in western Liberia. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 132–133, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Sánchez-Vialas, Calvo-Revuelta, Castroviejo-Fisher, and De la Riva, 2020, Proc. California Acad. Sci., Ser. 4, 66: 146, considered the species of problematic taxonomic status but a possible member of the Equatorial Guinea fauna.
