Distribution

Islands of Hokkaido (Japan) and Sakhalin (Russia); Kamchatka to eastern European Russia (up to 45° E), south to northern Mongolia and northeastern China.

Considered a genus distinct from Hynobius by Inukai, 1932, J. Fac. Sci. Hokkaido Imp. Univ., Ser. 6, Zool., 1: 191-217, and more recently by Fei and Ye, 1983, Acta Herpetol.
