Astylosternus occidentalis Parker, 1931, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 10, 7: 492. Holotype: BMNH 1930.11.19.22, by original designation; now renumbered BM 1947.2.5.48, according to museum records. Type locality: "Sandaru, E. Sierra Leone". Rödel, Barej, Hillers, Leaché, Kouamé, Ofori-Boateng, Assemian, Gonwouo, Nopper, Brede, Diaz, Fujita, Gil, Segniagbeto, Ernst, and Sandberger-Loua, 2012, Zootaxa, 3245: 15, noted that two localities named Sandaru exist in the area reasonably assumed to contain the type locality.

Fondamental d'Afrique Noire in Dakar, Senegal, and now lost according to A. Ohler in Rödel, Barej, Hillers, Leaché, Kouamé, Ofori-Boateng, Assemian, Gonwouo, Nopper, Brede, Diaz, Fujita, Gil, Segniagbeto, Ernst, and Sandberger-Loua, 2012, Zootaxa, 3245: 15). Type locality: "Yale; en forêt secondaire", Mont Nimba region, Guinea. Synonymy with Astylosternus diadematus by Guibé, 1950 "1948", Cat. Types Amph. Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat.: 58. Synonymy with Astylosternus occidentalis by Lamotte, in Schiøtz, 1967, Spolia Zool. Mus. Haun., 25: 67, and confirmed by Rödel, Barej, Hillers, Leaché, Kouamé, Ofori-Boateng, Assemian, Gonwouo, Nopper, Brede, Diaz, Fujita, Gil, Segniagbeto, Ernst, and Sandberger-Loua, 2012, Zootaxa, 3245: 15.

Distribution
Along high-gradient streams, from sea level to about 1300 m elevation, in the Nimba Mountain region of Sierra Leone, Liberia, southern Guinea, and western Ivory Coast.

Not assigned to species group by Amiet, 1978 "1977", Ann. Fac. Sci. Cameroun, 23–24: 99–227. Hillers and Rödel, 2007, Salamandra, 43: 1–10, reported the species from Liberia. Rödel, Barej, Hillers, Leaché, Kouamé, Ofori-Boateng, Assemian, Gonwouo, Nopper, Brede, Diaz, Fujita, Gil, Segniagbeto, Ernst, and Sandberger-Loua, 2012, Zootaxa, 3245: : 1–29, redelimited the species, provided a detailed account of systematics and life history, and redescribed the holotype. In addition they suggested that the population in Mont Péko National Park may represent an unnamed species. Channing, Rödel, and Channing, 2012, Tadpoles of Africa: 92–93, reported on comparative tadpole morphology. Griesbaum, Hirschfeld, Barej, Schmitz, Rohrmoser, Dahmen, Mühlberger, Liedtke, Gonwouo, Doumbia, and Rödel, 2019, Zoosyst. Evol., 95: 133–160, redescribed larval morphology. Rödel and Glos, 2019, Zoosyst. Evol., 95: 20, reported this species from the Krahn-Basa Proposed Protected Area in southeastern Liberia and the Foya Proposed Protected Area in western Liberia. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 230–231, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Kanga, Kouamé, Zogbass, Gongomin, Agoh, Kouamé, Konan, Adepo-Gourène, Gourène, and Rödel, 2021, Amph. Rept. Conserv., 15: 71–107, commented on conservation status, identification, range, and habitat on the Ivory Coast side of Mont Nimba.
