Removed from the synonymy of Brachycephalus ephippium by Pombal, 2010, Bol. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, N.S., Zool., 526: 6, where it had been placed by Cochran, 1955 "1954", Bull. U.S. Natl. Mus., 206: 5-7. See comments on the range by Pombal and Izecksohn, 2011, Pap. Avulsos Zool., São Paulo, 51: 447. Folly, Costa, Carmo, Martins, and Pombal, 2022, Zool. Anz., 298: 39–54, described osteological ontogeny in the post-hatching skeleton.
