Brachycephalus vertebralis Pombal, 2001, Amphibia-Reptilia, 22: 180. Holotype: MNRJ 11098, by original designation. Type locality: "Pedra Branca in Serra da Bocaina (between 23° 09′ -23° 13′ S; 44° 45′ -44° 48′ W), Municipality of Parati, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil".

Known from the type locality in the Serra da Bocaina in the Municipality of Parati and the Municipality of Cunha, state of São Paulo, Brazil.
