In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) binotatus series, Eleutherodactylus lacteus group of Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 221. Pombal and Cruz, 1999, Bol. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, N.S., Zool., 404: 1-10, provided a taxonomic account of the species, detailed the advertisement call, and noted that São Paulo records of this species applied to Eleutherodactylus nigriventris and Eleutherodactylus gehrti. In the Ischnocnema lactea species series of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 27. In the Ischnocnema verrucosa series of Canedo and Haddad, 2012, Mol. Phylogenet.
