Eleutherodactylus bartonsmithi Schwartz, 1960, Sci. Publ. Reading Public Mus. Art Gallery, 11: 10. Holotype: AMNH 63409, by original designation. Type locality: "mouth of Río Yumurí, east side, Oriente [now Guantánamo] Province, Cuba".

Hedges, Estrada, and Thomas, 1992, Herpetol. Monogr., 6: 68–83, reported on the call. In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) martinicensis series, Eleutherodactylus martinicensis group according to Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 220. Díaz and Cádiz, 2007, Herpetotropicos, Mérida, 3: 100–122, reported on the advertisement call.
