Eleutherodactylus varians staurometopon Schwartz, 1960, Sci. Publ. Reading Public Mus. Art Gallery, 11: 8. Holotype: AMNH 63243, by original designation. Type locality: "2 km. north, thence 12 km. west of Santa Fé, Isla de Pinos, Habana Province, Cuba".

Díaz and Cádiz, 2007, Herpetotropicos, Mérida, 3: 100–122, reported on the advertisement call (as Eleutherodactylus varians staurometopon). In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) varians species series, Eleutherodactylus varians species group, Eleutherodactylus varians species subgroup of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 62–64, and of Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 130. Henderson and Powell, 2009, Nat. Hist. Rept. Amph. W. Indies: 78, summarized the natural history literature. Rivalta González, Rodríguez Schettino, Mancina, and Iturriaga, 2014, Smithson. Herpetol. Inform. Serv., 145: 16–17, provided a dot map and localities.
