Ansonia penangensis Stoliczka, 1870, Proc. Asiat. Soc. Bengal, 1870: 104. Syntypes: location not designated; ZSIC 2717–18, 3585–86 considered syntypes by Chanda, Das, and Dubois, 2001 "2000", Hamadryad, 25: 102–103, who discussed them. Sclater, 1892, List Batr. Indian Mus.: 27, listed only 3585–86 and questioned whether they were actually syntypes. Type locality: "on Penang, two near the great water-fall (above Alexandra bath), and two in a narrow gorge about half way up the Penang hill", Malaysia.

Comment

 Chanda, Das, and Dubois, 2001 "2000", Hamadryad, 25: 102–103, discussed briefly the original publication and types. Quah, Grismer, Muin, and Anuar, 2011, Zootaxa, 2807: 57–64, recollected the species at the type locality and rediagnosed the species, implying that mainland records are referable to Ansonia malayana and Ansonia jeetsukumarani. Grismer, 2006, Zootaxa, 1327: 1327: 1–27, noted that nominal Ansonia penangensis in West Malaysia is composed of at least two species. Wood, Grismer, Ahmad, and Senawi, 2008, Herpetologica, 64: 321–340, provided comparative information for this and other species from the Malayan Peninsula and implied its restriction to the type locality.
