Atelopus balios Peters, 1973, Smithson. Contrib. Zool., 145: 12. Holotype: AMNH 17638, by original designation. Type locality: "Rio Pescado, Guayas Province, Ecuador".

Humid lowland and premontane Pacific forests of southwestern Ecuador (Azuay, Cañar, and Guayas provinces), 200–460 m elevation.

Placed in the Atelopus longirostris group in the original publication. Coloma and Lötters, 1996, Herpetologica, 52: 66–70, reported on the tadpole. Lötters, 1996, Neotrop.
