Atelopus chirripoensis Savage and Bolaños, 2009, Rev. Biol. Tropical, 57: 382. Holotype: UCR 8042, by original designation. Type locality: "from a boggy pond on the southeastern side of the Fila Norte, ca. 4 km N Cerro Chirripó Grande, Parque Nacional Chirripó, Cordillera de Talamanca, Distrito Limón, Cantón Limón, Provincia Limón (ca. 9º 32′ N, 83º 29′W), at ca. 3400–3500 m above sea level."

Known only from the type locality on the southeastern side of the Fila Norte, ca. 4 km north of Cerro Chirripó Grande, Parque Nacional Chirripó, Cordillera de Talamanca, Distrito Limón, Cantón Limón, Provincia Limón, Costa Rica.

In the Atelopus ignescens group according to the original publication. Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 98–102, compared this to the other species of Central America and provided a map and photograph.
