Melanophryniscus paraguayensis Céspedez and Motte, 2007, FACENA, 23: 33. Holotype: MNHNPA1115, by original designation. Type locality: "Departamento Central. Ytororó Country Club, 21 Km al sur de Asunción", Paraguay.

Distribution
Known only from the Departamento Central, Departamento Paraguaí, and Departamento Cordillera, Paraguay; expected in adjacent Argentina.

Comment
A member of the Melanophryniscus stelzneri group, most similar to Melanophryniscus cupreuscapularis, and reported as Melanophryniscus stelzneri spegazzini prior to its recognition as a species according to the original publication. Weiler, Núñez, Airaldi, Lavilla, Peris, and Baldo, 2013, Anf. Paraguay: 37, provided a brief account, image, and dot map for Paraguay. Zank, Becker, Abadie, Baldo, and Maneyro, 2014, PLoS One, E 9(4: e94625): 1–11, provided modeled distribution maps for the species under climate change.
