Melanophryniscus peritus Caramaschi and Cruz, 2011, Bol. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, N.S., Zool., 528: 3. Holotype: MNRJ 4255, by original designation. Type locality: "BRAZIL, MINAS GERAIS, Pico do Selado (22° 53′ 05″ S, 46° 01′ 43″ W; ca. 2000 m altitude), District of Monte Verde, Municipality of Camanducaia, State of Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil".

In the Melanophryniscus tumifrons group according to the original publication. Langone and Lavilla, 2024, Comun. Zool. Mus. Hist. Nat. Montevideo, 13: 34, provided a summary of the literature of the species.
