Nectophryne batesii Boulenger, 1913, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 8, 12: 71. Syntypes: BMNH 1907.5.22.148-150 (reregistered 1947.2.19.30-33), 1908.5.30.112-117 (formerly 1947.2.19.34-39), 1911.5.30.15 (reregistered 1947.2.19.42), 1913.10.27.45-48 (reregistered 1947.2.19.40-41), according to Grandison, 1985, in Frost (ed.), Amph. Species World: 69, and museum records. Type locality: "Neighbourhood of Bitye, on the Ja River (Congo System)", Cameroon.

Distribution
Southeastern Nigeria, western and southern Cameroon, Gabon, southern (and expected in northern) Rep. Congo, southern Central African Republic, and northeastern Dem. Rep. Congo; Equatorial Guinea (Bioko I. and Río Muni).

Larson and Zimkus, 2018, Herpetol. Conserv. Biol., 13: 247, commented on the species in Gabon. Dewynter and Frétey, 2019, Cah. Fondation Biotope, 27: 15, summarized the literature for Gabon and provided photographs (p. 51). Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 92–93, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Evol., 162 (107184): 1–12, reported on phylogeographic patterns and noted that the species falls into three allopatric populations which show deep lineage divergence.
