Bufo papillosus Philippi, 1902, Supl. Batr. Chil. Descr. Hist. Fis. Polit. Chile: 30. Syntypes: MNHNC according to the original publication, likely lost by implication of Cei, 1958, Invest. Zool. Chilen., 4: 265–288. Type locality: "alta cordillera que separa la provincia chilena de Cautin, de la Patagonia" (= High cordillera that separates the Provinces of Cautín and Patagonia), Chile. Considered a nomen dubium by Nieden, 1923, Das Tierreich, 46: 146.

Argentina (Neuquén, Río Negro, and Chubut, possibly into northwestern Santa Cruz) and into the neighboring regions of Chile.

Vera Candioti, Grosso, Pereyra, Haad, Lescano, Siu-Ting, Aguilar, and Baldo, 2020, Herpetol. Monogr., 34: 116–130, reported on larval morphology and recognized this species in the Rhinella spinulosa group. it was previous considered a synonym of Rhinella spinulosa by Cei, 1958, Invest. Zool. Chilen., 4: 267; Cei, 1962, Batr. Chile: 49; Gallardo, 1965, Pap. Avulsos Zool., São Paulo, 17: 60. In the Rhinella marina clade, Rhinella spinulosa group of Pereyra, Blotto, Baldo, Chaparro, Ron, Elias-Costa, Iglesias, Venegas, Thomé, Ospina-Sarria, Maciel, Rada, Kolenc, Borteiro, Rivera-Correa, Rojas-Runjaic, Moravec, De la Riva, Wheeler, Castroviejo-Fisher, Grant, Haddad, and Faivovich, 2021, Bull.
