Montane subtropical forest of northwestern Argentina (El Arazayal, Rio Pscado, and Sierra de la Pavas, Salta; Abra Colorado and Abra de Cañas, Calilegua National Park, Jujuy), to San Lorencito, Mendez Province, Tarija Department, Bolivia.

In the Bufo veraguensis group and previously confused with Bufo quechua according to the original publication. De la Riva, Köhler, Lötters, and Reichle, 2000, Rev. Esp. Herpetol., 14: 58, thought this species possibly to occur in Bolivia. Lavilla and Cei, 2001, Monogr. Mus. Reg. Sci. Nat. Torino, 28: 27, provided information on the distribution in Argentina. See photograph, map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status (as Bufo rumbolli) in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 190. Haad, Vera Candioti, and Baldo, 2014, Herpetologica, 70: 184–197, reported on larval morphology. In the Rhinella margaritifera clade, Rhinella veraguensis group of Pereyra, Blotto, Baldo, Chaparro, Ron, Elias-Costa, Iglesias, Venegas, Thomé, Ospina-Sarria, Maciel, Rada, Kolenc, Borteiro, Rivera-Correa, Rojas-Runjaic, Moravec, De la Riva, Wheeler, Castroviejo-Fisher, Grant, Haddad, and Faivovich, 2021, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 447: 1–156. Mendoza-Miranda, Nieto-Ariza, Hidalgo-Cossio, and Velez-Liendo, 2021, Check List, 17: 765–768, provided the record from Méndez Province, Tarija Department, Bolivia 2015 to 2369 m elevation.
