Bufo preussi Matschie, 1893, Sitzungsber. Ges. Naturforsch. Freunde Berlin, 1893: 175. Syntypes: ZMB (originally 60 specimens), BMNH 1935.2.8.3 (now 1947.2.20.43) and 1898.9.14.7 (now 1947.2.20.42) by museum records (presumably exchanged from ZMB), MCZ 10296 (exchanged from ZMB according to Barbour and Loveridge, 1929, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 69: 232), according to Grandison, 1985, in Frost (ed.), Amph. Species World: 77. Type locality: "Buea, Kamerun, 950 m".

Distribution
In creeks of the highlands (700–1200 m elevation) of western Cameroon on the lower slopes of Mount Cameroon and Mount Kupe, West Africa; not recorded from west-central Togo for over 100 years and therefore this locality is judged to have been made n error.
