The name is ascribed by Tschudi in the original publication to Bibron, but presumably the diagnosis is Tschudi’s. Preoccupied by Peltocephalus Duméril and Bibron, 1835. Synonymy with Calyptocephalus by Guichenot, 1848, in Gay (ed.), Hist. Fis. Polit. Chile, Zool., 2: 107; Jiménez de la Espada, 1875, Vert. Viaje Pacif. Verif. 1862–1865: 2; Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Myers and Stothers, 2006, Arch. Nat. Hist., London, 33: 255-256, discussed the earlier nomenclatural discussions of Myers, 1962, Copeia, 1962: 195-202, Donoso-Barros and Cei, 1962, Herpetologica, 18: 195-203, and Lynch, 1971, Misc. Publ. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 53: 1-238m and concluded that Caudiverbera Laurenti, 1768, Spec. Med. Exhib. Synops. Rept.: 43 (type species: Caudiverbera peruviana Laurenti, 1768 [= Lacerta caudiverbera Linnaeus, 1758], by subsequent designation of Stejneger, 1936, Copeia, 1936: 135) is based on a fictitious animal and therefore unavailable for scientific nomenclature. They recommended the use of the name Calyptocephalella gayi as the appropriate name for this species. See comment under Telmatobufo. Formas and Espinoza, 1975, Herpetologica, 31: 429-432, suggested karylogical evidence for a close relationship of Telmatobufo and Calyptocephalella (as Caudiverbera).
