Holotype: ANDES-A 3673, by original designation. Type locality: "Colombia, Valle del Cauca, municipality of Buenaventura, 3.84°, -77.20°, 10 m elevation, in the village of Piangüita, within a patch of moderately disturbed rainforest, amidst the leaf litter". Distribution

Wet forests along the lower San Juan and Dagua river basins in the vicinities of Buenaventura, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, extending eastwards to the foothills of the Cordillera Occidental, but not surpassing elevations above 200 m.

Comment

The sister taxon of Phyllobates terribilis, previously confused with Phyllobates aurotaenia, according to the original publication, where comparative larval and adult morphology, molecular markers, advertisement call, natural history, and distribution were detailed.
