Placed in the synonymy of Hyla miliaria by Duellman, 1970, Monogr. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas: 352, but subsequently removed by Duellman, 2001, Hylid Frogs Middle Am., Ed. 2: 793. Rueda-Almonacid and Rueda-Martínez, 2004, in Rueda-Almonacid et al. (eds.), Libro Rojo Anf. Colombia: 172-177, provided an account, map, and comments about the imprecise type locality. See map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 245, who provided the Ecuador record. Cruz-Rodríguez, Lynch, Cárdenas, and Caicedo-Portilla, 2021, Zootaxa, 4965: 266, pictured the holotype in the MLS. Coloma and Duellman, 2025, Amph. Ecuador. Vol. 2: 399–402, provided an account, with photographs, which summarized identification, adult and larval morphology, systematics, natural history, distribution (including a dot map for Ecuador), and conservation.
