Hyla ahenea Napoli and Caramaschi, 2004, Copeia, 2004: 540. Holotype: MZUSP 93493, by original designation. Type locality: "Campo de Fruticultura da Bocaina (22° 38′ S, 44° 34′ W; 510 m altitude), Municipality of São José do Berreiro, State of São Paulo, Brazil".

In the Hyla circumdata group according to the original publication. In the Bokermannohyla circumdata group of Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 83. Garey, Provete, Martins, Haddad, and Rossa-Feres, 2014, Check List, 10: 308–316, reported additional specimens and localities in the Serra da Bocaina National Park and surrounding areas. Garey, Provete, Ouchi-Melo, Haddad, and Rossa-Feres, 2020, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 17: 1–16, described  larva morphology and the advertisement call.
